Janice Haywood on Enduring Connections: Creating a Preschool and Children's Ministry

Increasing numbers of ministers and layperson are recognizing the importance of their childhood ministry to the health of their church. But, they struggle with what makes a good preschool and grade-school children's ministry. They may wonder if their church is making a significant difference in the lives of the children involved in their ministries because they do not know how to gauge their impact.

While most churches hope they are doing some things that will contribute to the faith of their children, others are becoming intentional about designing ministries that connect the children to God and the community of faith in enduring ways. To them, it is more than attracting large numbers of children, teaching lessons and verses to quick minds, or providing the latest “new program” no matter how wholesome or entertaining it is!

These churches have a vision for creating in the lives of children enduring connections to God and others that will guide them to become devoted Christ followers throughout their lifetime. While a purposeful plan for teaching biblical knowledge and life application at each age must be a significant part of their design, the truly effective church also invests time and energy in weaving enduring relationships with the children and their parents.

Enduring Connections assists churches in designing their unique plan for an effective childhood ministry. Part I of the book outlines the building blocks for constructing a quality ministry beginning with creating a vision for the ministry. Instead of a series of activities and programs the church has a compelling vision of what preschoolers and children will learn and experience at each age. Other elements include:

  • Valuing children as contributing members of the faith family.
  • Providing support, encouragement, and resources for parents.
  • Nurturing of teachers and leaders in the ministry.
  • Providing for children with special needs or situations.
  • Having a process for guiding children into a personal relationship with Jesus.
  • Providing appropriate and appealing programs.
  • Caring about reaching new children while nurturing those already involved.
  • Selecting literature.
  • Use a team and/or minister to guide and support the ministry.

Part II of Enduring Connections guides the minister or layperson who is responsible for directing the childhood ministry, including how to fulfill the many roles expected from such a position. The Appendix includes sample job descriptions, parental helps for worship, and suggested resources for ministers and parents.
